This theme is one of the most iconic, recognizable, themes in the horror/suspense genre. It just adds to the chaos that's already going on in the movie. It just grabs you by the throat and pulls you in.

Herrmann never fails to impress me with his creative use of timbre, only he or Jerry Goldsmith can write music this evocative but also simple

Can you imagine being a young 14 yr old boy as I was when I first saw this on it’s opening day? When there was a bright sequence from the screen I looked around the theater and I never saw so many freaked out, scared looking people. Also Hitchcock demanded no one was allowed in the theater after the movie started. Brilliant marketing but really, you did need to see it from the beginning. The shower scene was shocking for many reasons, but really, up until this movie the main character wouldn’t be killed off. That really came from left field and was a jaw dropping “WHAT!” Moment. 2:56

My girlfriend is a huge Hitchcock fan so I put this song on speakerphone while she was using my shower and crept up on her while holding a hairbrush.

My grandfather used to be at a projectionist at the T&D Theater in Oakland when this movie came out. He told us that the theater received strict instructions from Alfred Hitchcock. One of them was that the projectionists were to close the curtains when the scene of the car being pulled out of the water on a chain began and to remain closed until the movie ended. Hitchcock even sent people pretending to be customers to the theater to make sure the projectionists did it.

Sorry but I had to give this hotel a 1 star review... There's water constantly running, blood all over the restroom floor, people are always screaming and making noise, there's holes in the walls, the rooms smell terrible, and the cashier is never around...

sometime in the 80’s when my mom and dad got married my dad was showering, she put the movie on and had the theme playing, then went into the bathroom with a knife and ripped the shower curtain open and he screamed. he said the movie traumatized him but my mom doing that was even scarier lol

It’s funny calling something as iconic as Psycho underrated, but I feel it applies to this case as all anybody references is the high string chords of the murder scenes. But this entire piece is brilliantly constructed anxiety in a musical format. Perfect for encapsulating impending death and terror.
