There are different ways for officials to learn the rules of basketball. We find that reviewing play scenarios can make the rules questions more vivid.
With our Basketball Rules Expert series we hope to do just that. A play scenario unfolds, just as it would in a game, and we then need to have the rules with us to adjudicate the play properly. Join us for some play review and let’s all get better as basketball officials.

Good morning Greg, I need to work on flagrant foul mechanics.... with that said #23 there was discussion around technical fouls. I understand the mechanics for direct on coach, etc... What is the proper mechanics for a flagrant foul. An example of this would be a defender intentionally fouling a kid on a drive but it rises above intentional with a forearm to the head? If anyone could answer, that would be helpful as I learn. Thank you.

Regarding question #43, I had a game over a decade ago wherein a player, late in the game, scored an “And-1” layup. Soon afterwards he taunted the opponent who fouled him, for which I whistled a Technical foul, which was his 5th and disqualifying foul. No bench personnel were available as his team had started with 6 guys, one of which already fouled out earlier in the game. So my partner and I awarded the FT attempt for the “And-1” to the coach’s selection of the four remaining on the court for that team.

For anyone who was left confused by Question 23., an Indirect Technical Foul can ONLY be assessed to the Head Coach, and it ONLY occurs when a Bench Personnel (assistant coach, manager, statistician, team member not in the game, all players during an intermission) is assessed a Technical Foul.

As a result of the Bench Personnel receiving the Technical Foul, the Head Coach also receives an Indirect Technical Foul.

This is the reason an Indirect Technical Foul is not added towards the Team Foul total for each half. It has already been accounted for during the Bench Personnel’s Technical Foul.

Be warned: All flagrant fouls are Flagrant 2
