As a padawan, Obi Wan was not the most gifted with the force nor the most elegant with a light saber. In fact Obi wan almost didn't become a Jedi as he was consistently at the bottom of his class as a Jedi padawan. However, what he lacked in force sensitivity and natural ability with a light saber, he made up for with sheet determination and loyalty to the Jedi and their light side teachings.

Obi wan percivered and excelled under the tutorlidge of qui gon jinn, who was himself a powerful yet questioning Jedi master.

Obi Wan took the Jedi teachings of peace, serenity and honour to the absolute extreme, only ever using his weapon in the service of the light side. To aid him in his quest to serve the light, he mastered form 5 light saber combat, the most defensive form and arguably the most attune to the light.

Order 66 and the rise of the empire brought new challenges for the Jedi, testing his philosophy and morality to the limits.

His exile on the harsh planet of tattooine weakened the body of the Jedi master but his mind would grow significantly stronger.

In the barren desert, Kenobi honed is connection to the light side, learning how to become one with the will of the force itself. During this time, He even learned how to gain immortality through the force ghost of qui gon jinn.

To make up for his weakened body, Kenobi incorporated other lightsaber forms, largely form 1, into his largely form 5 dueling style.

The addition of other styles gave Kenobi a highly simplistic lightsaber style but that was not necessarily a weakness. His focused mind gave him unmatched clarity and his simple style allowed him to strike with great precision and accuracy.

As we saw in the maul Vs Kenobi duel, Kenobi's well placed and simplistic blows allowed him to defeat maul in mere seconds; his immense connection to the light side of the force no doubt aiding him against Palpatine's fallen apprentice.

Even Vader feared the Jedi master during their duel on the death star: the dark lord knew all too well how great of an opponent Obi wan could be

Although Obi wan died at Vader's hands, this was very much intentional. Obi wan knew that he would be far more powerful when he was one with the force and no longer hindered by his aging body.

The ghost of Kenobi was highly influential in defeating the empire by aiding Luke in blowing up the death star and offering advice and council; becoming far more useful to the rebel alliance than an old Jedi ever could be.

It is so interesting that Lucas in an old script made Obi-Wan and Palpatine the same level.
If I am not remembering wrongly, in a power rating Both Palpatine and Obi-Wan was 8, Vader was 6, and Luke was either 6 too or 4.
