Riding the side bevel on a Cherry bowl / wood turning

Показать описание
Riding the side bevel on an Irish grind is a very old technique for levelling the surface on the outside of a bowl. It works in a similar way to a standard block plane in flat work where the cutting edge is at a right angle to the work. It is a great finishing cut but requires both good tool control and a lot of patience as it take very light shavings. In this video I touch on the difference between a sheer scrape, a sheer cut and riding the side bevel (or as I have heard it referred to years ago as a bowl gouge plaining cut).
Cherry is a beautiful wood with stunning grain and figure. Like all fruit wood it can be difficult to word as it has a tendency to want to split which this piece did. A little touch of resin sorted that out though.
Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way.
