Taiwan reported zero local cases on Thursday, for the first time in more than two months. Officials said they were still investigating two infection chains with an unknown infection source. Also on Thursday, Taiwan reported 82 imported COVID cases, the most since the start of the pandemic. Let’s hear from the CECC.

Chen Shih-chung
CECC
Today we have 82 imported cases, which is a new high for us. Yesterday we had a relatively large number of people enter Taiwan, about 2,500. Of them, 1,536 people from 26 flights were tested upon arrival. Tests came back positive for 65 of them, for a positivity rate of 4.23%. We aren’t afraid of big numbers. Everything depends on whether people follow the rules– if they stay inside during home quarantine, if they don’t let other people in, if they avoid contact with others, and if they carry out rapid tests properly after the 10th day of quarantine. These measures are what will influence our approach to reopening.

The greatest number of imported cases arrived from Vietnam, followed by Thailand. Health minister Chen Shih-chung says that quarantine compliance will be crucial to keeping the virus out of the community.
