With a name like “The Luxor Ballooning Accident”, I really was not expecting this to be a case from 2013.

‘None of them were ready to face the choice about the manner of their death’ chilling sentence.

Was anyone else really surprised that hot air balloons hold 20 passengers...I always get the idea in my mind of a little basket that could maybe hold like 3 people

As of June 2019, they have suspended air ballooning in Luxor.
Apparently in the last 13 years, they've had at least 9 crashes similar to the one in this video.
Over 130 tourists have either been injured or killed during these accidents.

If the operator of a vehicle suddenly leaves said vehicle, it is generally advisable to follow them.

He must have been screaming for his wife to jump. I bet she froze in fear. How heartbreaking.

I went a few years after this without knowing about the incident. I went to Egypt and did a tour of the country, with a stop in Luxor, so I did the balloon ride over The Valley of Kings. My balloon crashed due to high winds. We came in really fast and landed before our landing crew was on-site. Pilot told us to get into landing position, which we were drilled for before the flight. It's a procedure we do regardless of if there's apparent danger, just in case. 15 feet off the ground and there was a panic in his voice. A good portion of my group was older people and landing position was pretty much turning away from landing direction, squatting down with someone either in front of or behind you, stronger person behind, and just holding on for dear life on the wall if the basket goes horizontal, which it did. We got dragged at least 80 feet across a dry rocky river bed. I was really surprised that no one got hit with an errant rock. Everyone was safe, but it was pretty scary. As we recovered from our arm-strain and the adrenaline, we watched the other balloons land quickly, but otherwise properly with the landing crews chasing them around. Comical, but evident that we landed too early and that the Pilot knew it was risky to do without the landing crew. I recounted the story to a co-worker, a Pharmacist from Egypt, and he told me about this unfortunate crash.

"Well I would simply have jumped from the perfect height, at the perfect time" - YouTube commenters

Ultimately I think if you have to choose between jumping from an extreme height or burning, jumping is probably the better of the two options. Hitting the ground at terminal velocity will kill you instantly and painlessly, whereas death by fire is a prolonged and painful experience.

Admittedly still a nightmarish situation either way. Those poor people.

The most tragic part is that if everyone would've taken the pilot's example and jumped out the second he did, they probably would've all survived with rather minimal complications. Remember folks, keep an eye on your surroundings and if you have a chance to save yourself, take it. Don't let fear hold you back.

Well, now I know what I'm going to do if the pilot of my hot air balloon jumps out.

Holy cow, talk about survivor's guilt--guy jumps from the basket and leaves his wife behind. Ouch.

Oh this is one from my country! I was 13 at the time so I remember it, it was really sad hearing about it. As a kid I always wanted to be in an air balloon but after hearing about it, I changed my mind.

Potential tips I’ve learned from this channel (take what you will and consider for your own safety protocols):

With crushes: avoid being near fences, walls or doors where you’d be potentially pressed up and crushed to death. To avoid being smothered within a giant crowd, try to keep your head up and keep moving. (This is what I gained solely based off this channel so make of it what you will, it’s probably better to look up articles online that tell you how to avoid and get out of crushes so research is important).

With boats and ships on fire that seem to have no hope of being saved: listen to the captain if they know what they’re doing. Follow crews orders; put on a life jacket and get on a life boat; if no life boat, get a life jacket and jump into the water. If no life jacket, find someone who can swim and hold onto them, if no one’s around, find a large flat wooden board or plank or piece of wooden furniture that will float and get into the water with it. Believe it or not, a wooden door can hold two people afloat as proven on myth busters. Also the sole survivor of the Moby Prince boat disaster seemed to have survived by breathing through his wet shirt to breathe in as little smoke as possible, though note he did not jump in the water because there was an oil spill and it could have been set alight at any second so he survived by hanging on the side of a railing for about two hours waiting for help to arrive.

In a burning building such as the Beverly Hills Fire and the Chicago theater fire: ideally know your venue before you book tickets and go, most ticket services online show you a big layout of the building/concert venue with distinct labels of emergency exits and main doors. Know your emergency exits, listen and follow the staff and busboys because they usually know the layout of the venue.

Theme parks: don’t run into areas that say don’t trespass. But I think we all know that one!

Ideally do your research and know where the nearest fire extinguishers are in your home in case of a fire. This channel convinced me that it’s a good thing to be prepared and aware of your surroundings at large venues.

This is the worst story I think I have ever heard. It’s at least up there with some of the worst when you consider the aspects of the 2 survivors & watching the people still up there knowing they are doomed & then the actual people up there do I jump or do I burn? Makes you feel sick

The Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority released its final report of the
crash on 7 January 2014. The 219-page report blamed a leak in a fuel
line connected to the balloon's burner. The aging line had been in use
since 2005 and sprung a leak, which ignited as the balloon came in to
land. The fire severely injured the pilot, who jumped or fell from the
basket. Some of the ground crew released the ground line in order to
attend to the pilot, so that the remaining crew could not keep the
balloon near the ground. The flaming balloon rose rapidly and
uncontrolled, then exploded.

I've been in the hot air balloon in Luxor about 2010 and we were given all the warnings, precautions and the Captain told us to listen closely to him especially around take off and landing. They aren't toys.
