That reference Shimmer made to Celestia's personality change. That had to be related to the Nightmare Moon fiasco. Easy enough to see Celestia being depressed over the situation with Luna and if Celestia's original teaching style was based on what she learned from Starswirl, then she was probably strict, and no nonsense. I think Celestia realized copying Starswirl's methods was a poor method and she adapted before Twilight came along. Basically, Celestia wasn't the same pony we know in this series for thousands of years.

Sunset’s line “Princess Celestia has a sense of humor? Looks like I am not the only one who has changed.” makes me sad because before Sunset went away Luna was still on the moon and Celestia was probably in depression. When Luna came back Celestia started to get better. If you watch Celestia troughout mlp you will see that. It breaks my heart

Why do I get the feeling that after Luna's banishment Celestia was cold and stern and rarely smiled or showed emotion

I somehow think the best explanation for Sunset's actions and views on Celestia was because they both wanted completely different roles (maybe even exact opposite roles). As in maybe Celestia wanted a student who would become a leader that is pure of heart and spread friendship influence; whereas Sunset wanted to be a something more like a ruthless, cruel and manipulative dictator with the power to control everything.

I love the dynamic between Twilight and Sunset in this scene. They seem to have one of the strongest bonds ever.

Celestia's serious face is easily one of my favourite expressions she displays in the series. It's like she's saying "The moon's absent right now and my patience is thinning." XD
