I'm 6ft11 and even though I'm sure I'll never get a full front lever, the very process of trying has blown my lats up. They look like freaking balloon animal balloons and that's good enough for me. Hell that's been my entire journey with calisthenics, starting at that height while being very over weight. I'm sure front levers, hand stand push ups, planches, and other skills like that will forever be unavailable to me no matter how hard I train, but, the very process of trying, just getting better at my compound movements, very slowly increasing my progressions, and then doing the easiest skill progressions for literally years at a time has completely transformed my physique. I believe in the process. The process, the journey itself, is far more rewarding than the destination

I personally hate doing static holds.. but i love the front lever raises not only is it a great lat exercise.. but is has also helped me develop my front lever game tremendously

Ever tried greasing the groove on other skill movements? Let's hear your feedback!

The new record is 57 seconds. Back when the world record was 53 seconds I was trying to break it. I got to 48 seconds at 145.
You are right about frequency, but thats really just what gets you in the ball park.
To get more time you also need to train it as a dynamic movement. Thats how you prepare for those unwanted wobbles, and movements that cost you energy. Especially if you move an inch at a time stopping for a few seconds.
You might also learn to get in position from the top down. It takes less distance, and energy. That way you get more time in the lever.
Another thing, try going a hand width wider, and a hand width narrower sometimes if your shoulders tolerate it. It makes your advantaged position more submaximal if you can get time in a disadvantaged position.

been doing GTG frog front lever raises (FitnessFaqs explains the benefit of the frog leg stance) and skill wise i can do open hip leg stretched negatives, but no holds yet. Physically though, not much difderenr in lats but my rear delts blew up in mass.

i've done greasing the groove for pushups/pullups and it's been awesome for my strength but i find it helps me recover faster too. only really thought about doing it for pushups/pullups/rows and never really skill work like front lever. i used to have a personal goal of getting a front lever but could never really achieve it lol. gonna be trying this out to see how it goes!!

It took me long long time to treat pull ups like an ohp for example, this could translate as stupid af, greasing the groove has many more benefits beyond only the freaquency aspect, as time passess you start to perform the reps cleaner and the movement has a harder mucle contraction so by definition even if the given reps ate the same the muscle stimulus is different

Have you ever tried bouldering Alex? The front lever is quite a popular movement for climbers, it's so much more than just a core exercise, I feel it in my rear delts and lower back more than my core

Great video alex! I've actually been doing this the last 2 months just because I would try out the Front Lever so often at my door pull up bar and I can tell you this advice is legit. The progress has been very fast for me. It's also nice because it doesn't interfere with any of your hypertrophy work that way. I'm doing the same thing with the handstand and it's helped a lot as well although progress there is admittedly a little slower, since it's more difficult with respect to the coordination you have to learn.

Training front lever 5-7 times a week has helped me go from hardly holding the tucked position to being decent at the advanced tuck pretty fast. I find greasing the groove works really well for me with skills, like the handstand, planche etc.

I got it in my head recently that I’m definitely gonna get a front lever. Dunno why. Never shown an interest in gymnastic skills but it’s gonna happen

I just realised in this video and I’m sure it’s been pointed out before but a front lever is very similar to a pullover and that might make pullovers a good accessory for training it.

I actually personally would not do GTG on front lever. Too stressful on the elbows for me. But they are my first exercise on my upper body days, wether it's Holds, raises, negatives, holds with bands. Front lever always light up my back

I have been mainly doing calisthenics for the past 5 years and front lever was the very first advanced skill that I learned. No matter what, my back is always destroyed after every pull day I do. Free weights and machines can be good for back development, I also do them as complementary, but imo front lever is one of the greatest.

i use those front lever raises almost everytime at the beginning of my pull workout days and they work! i am much better in de full front lever now. slow negatives on a dipbar from straightbar dip position to static front lever are also great and you can also make easy repetitions with those espescially with the hands in false grip👌
