Exactly the solution I've been looking for. I recently upgraded my dust collection, but hadn't yet figured out a good way to tell when it was getting full. I will try this. Thanks!

That looks like a great approach. Instead of using a ruler, I would hold the dowel against the tub with the mark even with the top of the valve. Then I can see the height of the dust against the tub itself.

My Dust Collector has soft sides. I just run my hand down it once in a while to see the level.

I just cut out a small upper section of the drum and installed a plexiglass window.
