It is not easy to pinpoint exactly since when the German electro jazz band Nighthawks exists. In the mid 1990s bassist and producer Dal Martino invited trumpet player Reiner Winterschladen into his studio to work on a film music project. From this nucleus and in the course of time a proper band emerged and they have been touring regularly since 2003. While their numerous albums might be classified as rock jazz, the band consistently has toyed with and incorporated various stylistic influences, such as ambient, dub, or pop. A thematic focus for them has always been the journey – as such and musically. From this vantage point they compose and improvise spherically relaxed, at times rhythmically intense music. Catchy ingenious themes, carried by intricate grooves, are shaped into extended suspenseful arrangements. Named after Edward Hopper´s famous painting the Nighthawks are subtle painters of timbres with a keen feel for clear structures and all the nuances in between. Quite justifiably they have received the German Jazz Award multiple times.
