I could be mistaken, but I believe that Bach ushered in the era of playing cantabile. Even in the preface to his inventions, he specifically remarked on how these pieces would useful to a keyboard student who wishes to learn to play cantabile. Though many baroque pieces assume staccato as the standard articulation, Bach specifically did not, at least for his inventions. This guide is still good, though, for one who wishes to play staccato for other baroque pieces.
