What exactly caused Betty and Abigail to fall into fits is still a matter of debate. I’d like to know what a modern doctor would say if he or she could examine them. But people suffering fits leading to witch trials were far from new. There were the Loudun possessions, the Warboys case, parallel cases in New England, and the Paisley witches.
