Woodturning Spiral Segmented Vase With Blooper Fix

Показать описание

With this project, I am exploring more into segmented turning. Beyond plain rings, this vase features a spiral at 120 degrees apart around the vase.

Featuring 15 rings of 12 segments each, the segment count is 180 segments plus the base which is 3 plys of maple. The vase is finished with walnut oil for a nice matte finish. It stands about 8 inches tall and 7 inches in diameter.

I made a mistake in the second layer. My segments were not correctly spaced. I did not notice the error until the bottom section had been glued up. I had to remove the bad ring and replace it. But noone would be able to tell the difference.

For the steady rest, please see my video where I review it.
Woodturning - My DIY Steady Rest Is Still Steady

Wow! This is a very impressive vase turning, Alan. I have done a number of segmented items, and as you mentioned, it is a real treat to be able to turn these items with continuous side-grain. I have done a couple of "brick" patterns, but not a spiral, so I am adding one to my to-do list. The other thing your video pointed out is that we can take advantage of the properties of today's amazing glue products, which provide "good enough" adhesion for partially assembling segments and rings. Imagine how long this project would take if each gluing had to set overnight!

Nice vase Alan. The mesquite goes very well with the maple. I have been segmenting for 30 years and wish I could say I never made your mistake. But I cannot. I recently made three small jugs and made the same mistake on all three of them. Maybe I am getting old. :-) At least you were able to correct your mistake. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.

Love it. I've made these spiral vessels too. I always make a base ring out of matching wood to the top ring. Beautiful turning!

Thanks so much. I've watched several people do segments, but your method seems easy and logical. Still a beginner, but I hope to try this some day when I have the resources. Thanks again!

What a great video on this segmented piece. I have built a sled, but that is as far as I have gone.

Beautiful vase Alan. I have tried some basic segmented turnings, but none this complex.

Very Nice! How long did this take you? Adding how long a project took would be a good addition to your videos.

Good stuff Alan, love it. I'm still needing a steady rest and a wedgie sled before I can attempt something like this.

As a native Texan I really want to get my hands on some mesquite (I promise not to BBQ with it). Since the greater Provo area isn't well known for mesquite trees, where are you sourcing your mesquite?

Is your Chuck adapter a live center for the tailstock? Is it 1-1/4" ? I only seem to be able to find the 1"
