Co-op's are key to American/ Canadian independent family farms without them mid size farms would no longer exist. Its a losing battle though as the capital overhead required for efficient farming is growing quickly. The economies of scale favor corporate sized operations and the mid size farms either have to grow into corporate operations themselves or be bought out by them transforming rural areas into expanses void of human community.
