What's SCORM? What's Tin Can? And which one do you need? In this video, we'll simplify these eLearning terms for you in under 2 minutes.

SCORM, which stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model, is a set of standards and specifications for creating eLearning courses. Developed in 2001, SCORM ensures that eLearning content is interoperable across various Learning Management Systems (LMS). This allows for the seamless movement of courses between different platforms without needing to redesign each LMS. SCORM stores data on learners but is limited by its age, with the most recent version released in 2004. It is designed for use on computers and requires an internet connection, which restricts its use to desktop and laptop environments.

Tin Can, also known as Experience API (xAPI), is a more recent eLearning standard introduced in 2013. It is designed to be versatile and compatible with various devices, including desktops, laptops, phones, and tablets. Tin Can's key advantages include offline accessibility and the ability to handle multiple pieces of media simultaneously, unlike SCORM which can only support a single piece of media at once. Tin Can also features a Learning Record Store (LRS) that stores learner data independently of an LMS, providing greater flexibility. This makes Tin Can more suitable for modern eLearning environments where mobile compatibility and offline access are essential.
