Just a caution to viewers, I have some brand named store bought topo maps that were not cheap, but I figured out the hard way they used a different datum than USGS and the other online maps. So none of my grid square coordinates work with them. The grid lines are actually over 100 Meters off. Thanks Stoker for the information!

I spent a lot of time in the four corners area while I was in grad school...a long time ago. If I could get you to Kentucky, you would never look back.

I hope you find the info valuable. When printing on your own whether at the house or out in town, make sure you are aware of the scale to which it will be printed. Best of luck and if you have any questions leave some comments.

I have been using SARtopo (or Caltopo) for my printed (and online...) maps. I like the fact they provide several different layers (like the 7.5' USGS topo scans, ) and let me fix the scale (I usually print at 1:10000, :25000, :50000, or even as an overview map when exploring a particular area...)

Stokematic, any idea what’s the best paper and/or material to use when making survival maps. The US Military survival maps are great, but I’m not sure that material is valve on the civilian market. Great channel. Keep up the great work.

Roswell. Nice. See anything strange in the skies? 🤔

Hello @stokermatic and all, Can we use these topo maps for the sub-division housing layout planning to study the current contours of the land? Or is this just to have an understanding of the geo contours on a high-level for traveling, treking and other purposes where we don't need accurate, precise contours? Please suggest.

I just got a mytopo for a state forest. It doesn't have any structures such as fire towers etc. I'll give them a call to see what I needed to order. In the flat pine forests of the eastern coastal plain there is little to sight on except forest fire towers.
So, watch for that ya'll.
Another thing is grid lines. If the light is dim, they are hard to see under the protractor. Does anyone print them a bit bolder?

Great video,
BUT, please tell us where we can obtain maps of any area we want that have the MGRS grids on them and are 1/25, 000 scale NOT 1/24, 000 so we can use our Military issue protractors.
Thanks

Thanks for this info. I'm a beginner and have 2 very beginner questions:
1. Most maps I've come across on USGS don't have the horizontal and vertical lines to find your quadrant to use the projector with. I see on the sides they have the numbers. Do you make the lines yourself? It seems like there's room for error there.
2: I have a standard US military protector, looks the same as yours, but I think it's for a 1:25, 000 scale and most of these maps seem to be 24, 000. Is there a conversion, does this protector work for both?
Thanks!

I gave you a thumbs up, however, I have issues. You often ramble on about things your viewer doesn't care about....your job on that ranch for example. You never once showed how to print any of those maps! That was the title of your video and what you talk about in the opening scene and then the rest of the video, you merely scroll all over the place.

Check your volume as well. Often times you fade out as you talk to yourself and I can't hear anything you're saying.

I love you man! Your land nav videos are top notch. I think this video maybe you just weren't as prepared. I don't know.

Again, I liked, shared, and I'm subscribed...I don't want to be too negative. But I REALLY DID want to know how to make my own maps!

Thanks for listening

What if you want a topographic map, but the area I want is only 22 feet? And I want the cracks and others stuff mapped out of a concrete area?
