I'm usually for practical effects, but this is EXACTLY what CGI was made for.

The crazy thing is, CGI by 1992 was actually decent enough if you gave the VFX team enough time. It was 1993 when Jurassic Park came out and despite its use of CGI it was a massive success.

It is respectful they wanted to make the scene authentic and didn't use cgi, and they also paid him 1k dollars every time he got stung. A good perk honestly

Fun fact he also had to have a mouth block piece to keep the bees from running around in his mouth and he even stated a few got around the block and hid in his cheek during the scenes. Tony Todd is an amazing actor and person for being able to do those scenes without flinching

Personally, if I told my bosses I'm deathly allergic to bees, and their response was "oh but we'll use baby bees, so the chance you die is just a bit smaller" I'd just not work with those people

Tony Todd is an icon and super sweet. Apparently he genuinely really scared Helen's actor in the film and apologised to her. James from Dead Meat got to do an interview with him and said that it was probably his favourite interview ever.
