In this tutorial, George Edmondson will lead you through the process of creating a cinematic scene with mO2 models tracked to the background footage. We will learn how to prepare our footage for tracking, place the mO2 models and make everything look convincing.

00:00 Introduction.
00:44 mTracker 3D and Motion natively.
01:10 Apple Motion - floating objects.
01:58 Oscillate option - bouncy behavior of objects.
02:21 Using mO2.
02:57 Setting a mask, Contrast filter and tracking.
04:50 Setting a target icon in the footage.
06:24 Copying and pasting the track data into mO2.
07:45 Adding a spaceship model.
08:55 Selecting the environment and color correction.
10:22 Adding some lights.
11:33 Animating the ship - adding motion and rotation.
14:12 Animating the ship - adding more light, intensity and a color look.
16:21 Adjusting the final look (blending the ship into the scene, adding a haze layer).
18:27 Adding mFilmLook to polish the look.

A shadow on the ground would
Of helped sell the effect a lot! But cool video none the less! I’m thinking about buying this plugin.

Wow, as if mTracker and mO2 weren't cool enough, that step of adding the gradient via image mask to 'haze' the ship into the background was definitely a Top Tip! I'm going to be thinking about that in lots of shots going forward. Thanks for another amazing tutorial!!

This is such a cool and complete fast tutorial... things to write down:
- Cmd click adds more tracker 3d points
- shift ignores the track point orientation (I find this PERFECT, sometimes we don’t want to deal with counter rotations on the content pos/rot/scale side of things)
- Get to like Behaviors like the oscillation ones... Personally I don’t know my thick skull always forgets about them. (Would be great too if one day those behaviors could be fed to the objects inside mO2)
- Nifty fog trick using a radial/linear gradient and masks (would be also great if mO2 rendering engine could add a fog utility of sorts... having already DoF and other way more complicated effects maybe this one is closer to be doable than not).

This tutorial is so awesome... you guys really nailed it with this... once I'm able to get another MacBook pro so I can take advantage of this program to the fullest, I will try my best pushing every feature to the max!! MacBook pro user at the moment

Amazing! A little expensive for students in Latin America, but fantastic tool!

Nice video thank you so much this! I was wondering how did you create a space model with textures and lighting effects of the engine etc.. Is the model layer a video layer? Or an actual model object with textures and lighting effects? What is the format of this file?

Thanks George, really useful as ever!

I've had mTracker since it came out and have not been able to get it to work the way these tutorials show. It bogs down my computer and does not track the footage as neatly and clean as these tutorial show. Also, why use motion 5? Is Motion 5 a better tool for compositing with mTracker? Seems cumbersome to export a project from motion 5 to include in a FCPX project, why not just stay within FCPX?

Would also have been nice to add a shadow catcher on the ground plane? Thats a lovely addition to MO2..

Can you get photorealistic results like in ae or blender? And what is the skill level needed compared to those two?

Can you track faces or people? I'm hoping to add Pointer or tracker on a person as they move through the scene, as well as adding an edited face PNG on an actor/change their shirt graphic.

That's one great tutorial! As always 😄 It would be great to have the footage of you moving on the roof to try to replicate the tutorial.

I upgraded to Big Sur 11.2.1 and updated Fcpx, motion etc.. when i do the tracking, the tracks stays for a while and it moves away from the location.. like its just sliding away.. in all your examples, it just stays like its nailed to the ground.. my clip settings and project settings are the same.. i even tried increasing the contrast.. but its not a perfect track. I used my Fuji XT4 camera with 25 fps 1080p.. and few times my fcpx crashed when i loaded a 3D model and dragged it to a 3D group inside Mo2.. this happened 3 times.. it crashed and Fcpx shut down by itself.. dont know what went wrong.. after tracking in mtracker, when i place the position it shows in one place and when i paste the track data to Mo2 and click 3d group, the x y z icon is not in the same place.. its slightly moved and reacts very differently.. please help..!!! thank you

I can confirm this doesn’t track properly for me. I’ve tracked footage and the placeholder tracks fine in my footage. When I go and add m02 to it, paste data, add a pre existing model from the library, it tracks completely wrong and I cannot resize the model to be of a realistic proportion at all. Please advise? I’m trying to get ahold of support with no luck

Why is the opening spaceship scene different to the one at the end of the video? (It's a different ship, lighting etc.) The opening scene looks a lot more realistic.
