Why do people keep getting icky Licky confused for a lizard he’s clearly based on a poisoned, dark frog

So we have 6 confirmed species for the Nightmare Critters, a dragon, an alligator, a poison dart frog, a black sheep, a shark and a bat. Definitely giving teen angst/goth vibes.

Maybe this was intended for the kids who kinda aged out of the playcare, or who remembered how they were orphaned.
Either way if the sharks pendant isn't an anchor I'm calling foul.

A bit of a read but this is my prediction for the Nightmare Critters lore in the Poppy Playtime timeline!

So as we all know by now, the Smiling Critters line was meant to be a big deal for Playtime Co, but with the whole PR disaster that was CatNap, the Smiling Critters line was a failure. Kids and parents now associated the toys with nightmares haunting children in the night, all because of the red smoke of CatNap. It ruined the toy line’s reputation and even brought into question the reputation of Playtime Co itself.

But what if Playtime Co saw this not as a total disaster, but as an opportunity to embrace this new nightmare reputation?

That’s when Playtime Co decided to create the Nightmare Critters! A new line similar to Smiling Critters, but with a cute spin that would embrace the new reputation of the toy line. Children were scared of the Smiling Critters now, and parents wouldn’t dare buy them either. But what about the market of teenagers and young adults who like a bit of angst? That’s who the target demographic of the Nightmare Critters are! Similar to the likes of Ruby Gloom or Kuromi or Plushie Dreadfuls. They’re a mix of cute and dark, like a Hot Topic appeal basically.

And it definitely helps if these teens and young adults hear stories of the previous line giving actual nightmares to kids! The mystery would bring so much interest to these toys, and perhaps even interest in the unsold Smiling Critters! It would be a win win!

It’s possible that the Nightmare Critters are marked as a Limited Edition Toy Brand or is a Scrapped Project that went completely Wrong or is ment to attract a Teenage Demographic with Playtime Co. using Teenagers in the Bigger Bodies Initiative instead of Kids and Adults.

I believe that the Nightmare Critters were marketed towards teenagers. Think about it.
The whole NC line seems more “edgy” than their Smiling Critter counterparts. And teens like things that are edgy, at least that’s what Playtime Co thinks.
Want more proof? Look at the descriptions. They use words such as “Like a lot of lot” and “The type of person to unlike the Smiling Critter descriptions which were more basic. But do you want to know who uses those kind of phrases? Older kids and teenagers. Boom. Case closed.
But do you want more proof. Well, let’s take a look at Icky Licky. More specifically, his scent. Coffee. Kids don’t drink coffee. But who does drink coffee? Teenagers and young adults.

Honestly, I do like these Nightmare Critters. Partially cause it appeals to the edgy teenager that still lives in my brain, but also because it feels like, intentionally “OC do not steal”, if that makes sense, and that feels like an interesting approach to the whole mascot horror genre. It would be interesting if it turns out they were a line of rejected toys, and in this chapter, it turns out that you have to face the rejected toys. OR, it turns out they’re their own characters, being the antithesis of the Smiling Critters and their groupthink. Still super brutal, but individualistically brutal, and working for the main antagonist as sort of minions.

Icky Licky does look like a "fan character" but you know I'm glad they went with this design for him. This is what it feels like to have your OC be a real living character in your own project that people love.

Icky Lickys design is either based off Tiger Salamanders, they’re a bigger than average Salamander that have the same color and pattern. Or the yellow banded dart frog, which are highly poisonous as wild frogs. But captive dart frogs are usually safe because of differences in their diets

Seriously.. the nightmare critters...? I don't wanna be that guy but it feels like they are only doing this cause they wanted more plushies cause the critters were popular.

Edit: I'll say, they probably won't affect the quality of the chapter if they have just their own little section and aren't that major of characters; even if they are obvious merch bait.

The funny thing I think about Baba Chops is a mixture of Happy Tree Friends and Cult of the Lamb vibes.
