That's great advice, as I wasted a lot of time making knives in steels I couldn't harden correctly. I work solely in 1084 now and my success rate is much higher. I love the stuff! It works easy under the hammer and is way more forgiving in the quench. 😎👍

"Don't chase the hype..." is a good philosophy for life in general.

Some makers spend their career chasing the improvements they are able to achieve with a single type, Hitachi white for example.

5160 is another very forgiving steel to work with. I think its real world performance for the average back yard smith is probably better than s7 or other high alloy steels because its so much easier to heat treat.

I nabbed a bunch of spring alloy annealed stock, at the scrap yard!

i worked with fine hss steel and other stuff
