How is it possible this has hundreds of views and only a small number of likes???? Come on people, don’t forget to push the like button, it’s important to show appreciation for these great YouTubers. This video is brilliant and very timely, given a new year is beginning. I am definitely going to make this my project for 2023. Thank you for the inspiration Matthew.

Coming back after seeing this when you posted it.. I Spent a week just focusing on one value study, slowing right down, and then did the painting with colour and it's pushed my skill level, ability and sense of 'knowing / seeing' further than any other tip, tutorial or teaching I've ever had...
Great start to 2023, thank you so much!!! Can't wait to keep doing more now!

You are so right Matthew. For years I thaught that using photoshop for finding values was a good idea, boy was I wrong, as by doing so, you are robbing yourself for so many valuble hours of painting and learning. Your channel made me realise that. Cheers for that mate!

This is great advice! Eons ago when I took art classes in college, I remember that you did not receive a grade for your assignment if you didn't turn in your value study of your final painting. What other good things did they teach me that I've forgotten!

Thank you so much, this makes a lot of sense. One of my previous art teachers told me to squint my eyes which I found really helpful as you end up jist seeing shapes and are not confused by detail at that stage. Cant wait to get back into watercolours.

Great stuff. I'm sold. I've tinkered with a few of these studies, but you convinced me to do 2 per week. I'm incorporating that into my routine. Happy painting in 2023 everyone!

I just picked up my first tube of Payne's Gray today, so I think I know what I'm going to use it for :) Thank you for this insightful advice video. I'm definitely struggling with values.
