What is Abstract Expressionism?

Very well said - I loved the way you explained this movement. However, I am disappointed that you didn't mention a single artist that happened to be female. Frankenthaler, E. de Kooning, Krasner, Joan Mitchell, Grace Hartigan....the list goes on. Any of these artists deserve to be included.

What about the fact that Hilma af Klint is now recognized as the pioneer of abstract expressionism? Or the groundbreaking work of Georgia O'Keeffee. Love the artists you discuss, but I think the discussion is missing a major layer by not including the work of these two women in particular.

Quick question: Does the name of this style require both words, "Abstract" and "Expressionism, " or can it be called just "Expressionism?" I ask because if the name requires both words, that would suggest that there are other types of "expressionism."
