Okay, so what to wear to a job interview?

Do you know what they told me in University? Two people interview for a job, one in a suit, one in a t-shirt. Who got hired? The one in the t-shirt because it's what you know that matters, not how you look. Wrong, that's how it should work, but unfortunately, that's often not the world we live in.

If you walk in there looking like the candidate. All you have to do is not talk yourself out of a job. But if you walk in there looking like you're really not the one, then you have to change everyone's mind, and that's really hard.

So look, it's stupid to get rejected for how you dress for the interview. Here's how to avoid that:

Number one, match what they look like. Do research, Google image search the company to find out how they dress. Failing that, image search the industry or role. For example, if they all wear polo shirts, you wear a polo shirt.

Number two, check out something called a Thompson tee. I swear by them. No matter how much you sweat when you're nervous, you'll never have moisture stains.

Now let's talk about specifically White Collar jobs from here on.

Number three, your interview is a sample of how polished and professional you could be to represent the company and the interviewer. So if you don't know exactly how they dress, err on the side of dressing up a little more.

Number four, no strong perfume or cologne. A reliable deodorant is fine. Stay away from t-shirts and jeans. Yes, in some circles, jeans are regarded as unprofessional.

Now for guys:
Number five, the more clean-cut, the more professional. The darker the suit, the more professional. For your tie, subdued colors are most professional, not primary colors or other loud colors. Consider wearing a watch and dress shoes that shine. Complete the ensemble. And just so everyone knows, business casual means no tie, business professional means you're wearing a tie.

Bespoke clothes, those that are tailored to specifically fit you, are nice but not really necessary.

Now for ladies:
Number six, let's talk job interview outfits. Skirts that end below the knees are okay. Dark pants that are not blue jeans or yoga pants are okay. And slightly more practical, a simple blazer is a lady's best friend. It can be dressed up or dressed down, but it still gives that professional look. Sleeves down for a formal look, but it's okay to roll the sleeves up so you have a three-quarter length sleeve. That's a professional yet casual look. If you don't have a blazer, stick to button-up shirts or blouses. Something conservative.
Jewelry:

Number seven, take it easy with jewelry. Don't wear everything you own. Don't wear rings on every finger or a grill. If you wear a necklace, wear a single necklace. If you have to wear bracelets, keep it at one bracelet. If you have to wear earrings, don't wear dangly earrings. Keep it at studs.

Ideally, the job interview should be the first time you dress up this much. It might add to how nervous and uncomfortable you feel. If you have the opportunity to get comfortable in those clothes, it'll help you feel more relaxed and confident.

Thank you, Bill. i watched a heap of your videos, over the last two weeks, prepared my answers, and had my resume story of "tell me about yourself". I related the job requirements to my experience and practised all the answers to the personality question, had my STAR-L answers, followed your advice and did my research on the company, and today after my second interview sent a short "thanks and if you have any questions" email, must have been the cream on the cake.... because 3 hours later i got the job offering.... for a weigh Bridge operator, and for 53 year, i felt the most prepared and confident i have ever been for a job interview, again thanks, Mr Todd

Can you please address what it means when a company tells you that you are not a "good cultural fit for the company?" I interviewed with the HR manager, and it went well. Took the assessment and it went well, then got a second interview with VP and the person who would be my supervisor. I thought it went well, but then they told the recruiter I was not a good cultural fit. The women interviewing me were white, but the company is mainly Japanese. I cannot understand what they possibly meant. I know in the long run it's for the better, but right now, it still stings and I'm really mad.

Genuine question, if the job you're applying for is very math/tech related and you have a medal for say, a Math Olympiad or F1 in schools for example. Should we wear the medal instead of a tie?
