You need wintergreen too, sassafras is good on it’s own but doesn’t taste completely like root beer without the wintergreen

I’ve never made mine that way🤷🏻‍♀️ I will try it! Usually I harvest the roots in spring (you can freeze them too) wash them off really well😂 you definitely don’t want dirt tea😉 🤫 you can also use the bark too! Add the root pieces to a pot of cold water then boil ( once it starts turn it down a bit) and just let it go until the water turns red from there proceed as you did! Also be aware Sassafras grows by lateral roots as soon as you disturb Mama Sass, baby Sass will pop up everywhere 😘

We made sassafras tea in Boy Scouts in the old days. They teached us how to live off the land a bit.

Next time try digging up the roots, hose off the dirt, and peel just the root that was underground. Dry the root, then add about 4 tablespoons to 4-6 cups boiling water and boil for 10-15 minutes, add 3/4 cup sugar, and add water to make 2 quarts. It will turn dark red when it begins to cool. It is absolutely delicious.

Grew up in 60's Maryland, Small town cut in to the Woods, Within the Beltway, Across from Andrews, Lucky our House, had the Woods Behind our Back yard, Dug up Sassafras Roots, Boiled them, Made Sassafras Tea, Good Stuff, Later found it Contained Safrole or Simular, was found to be a Carcinogen in Large Quanities. Figures, was Good Stuff, I Remember the Leaves to be Shaped Like a Mitten, thinking also 2 Thumbed, and No Thumbed? Mitten, was over 50 Years Ago. Miss it

Hey just FYI I think I read online somewhere that they stopped using sassafras in rootbeer recipes now a days because it was known to cause serious health issues.

It was also used as a tea. But sassafras tea contains a lot of
safrole, the chemical in sassafras that makes it poisonous. One cup of
tea made with 2.5 grams of sassafras contains about 200 mg of safrole.
This is about 4.5 times the dose that researchers think is poisonous.
So, in 1976, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled that
sassafras could no longer be sold as sassafras tea.

Question. I thought sassafras has safrole poison in it. Can you really make this drink without refrigerating and filtering?

Weird looking Sassafras plant. I live here in Southern Alabama and that plant didn't look right...also if you boil Sassafras root it turns brown like strong tea. We here in the south used to drink Sassafras tea which is why I don't think you got the right plant.

If it's native why not help it flourish? Then you'd have more of it?
