What I always ask myself because no tutorial I saw did mentioned anything about it : what about the dry vocals. Do you keep them dry? Do you compress them slightly to not noticeable to get more control over it? Or do you really keep it just completely dry?

What's the difference between parallel compression and turning threshold all the way down and turning ratio to something like 1:1 -> 2:1?

I don't see any benefit of a parallel compression on vocals. Just stack compressors, if you need more compression, or be subtle on ratio and threshold, if you need less.
