Broad Forks are powerhouses!!! It's all the peat in the store bought soil. It's a shame since peat bogs are endangered now. ❤

high loads of organic matter only exacerbates hydrophobicity, as dead bacteria and dried out organic matter is what causes the problem.

Best thing to do is to put some spent mushroom spawn into the soil and stop working the soil. No more tilth broadfork all of it. very little disturbance as possible. Just let that soil life rebuild. It's been a habit of people who say they are no till to till. Or do a little to much with the soil. It's not as bad as the bad ole days but it's in that inbetween stage which makes it worse. It's sometimes better to get on one side instead of doing inbetween. Also, woodchips are great but every once and awhile a layer of dried leaves as mulch is better. With some sprinkles of soaked biochar.

A drop or 3 of dish soap has long been used to help water penetrate soil.

I live in the low AZ desert, lots of clay and lots of this kind of soil. Will try your top.

just ad wood material to increase the carbon level and let the worms do the rest

I got some bags of compost from Lowe’s (a semi local brand) and it was like it had been treated with some hydrophobic chemicals.

Noticed this with my compost in the garden after returning from a vacation. It cracked up and the water now sits on top of the ground before soaking in...😮is my No Dig garden destroyed?

my soil has very active biome. The bacteria and fungal activity is most robust. I till with an 80 inch wide tiller 10" deep with a 47 horse tractor. Tilling does not harm the biome. I know there are "experts" who say it does. They are mistaken

ADD SAND AND GYMPSUM-I did this and WOW! Rewetting is easier. 😊❤

? If the soil has stayed that dry for a while the soil life is dead anyway so you might as well turn it and add a little good soil out of your garden in to bring the soil life back

misting repeatedly every few mins for 20 mins will do the trick also

Warm water for hydrophobic soil. Broad-forks can’t save the world.

Generally, I find playing a John Deere commercial is sufficient to wet the soil.
