Union Budget 2024: Standard Deduction Raised to Rs 75,000, New Tax Regime Revised | India Budget 2024
Presenting the Budget 2024-25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that the standard deduction for salaried employees will be increased from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000 in the new tax regime. Salaried employees will save Rs 17,500 in income tax. The exemption for capital gains has been increased to Rs 1.25 lakh per year for certain assets. Sitharaman also stated that an assessment can be reopened after three years only if the escaped income is Rs 50 crore or more. Additionally, she announced a comprehensive review of the Income-tax Act, 1961. Short term gains on certain financial assets will be 20%, rest is applicable tax rate. Long term capital gains will be 12.5%. Listed financial assets held for more than a year will be classified as long term.
