He was definitely a great writer. But his idealism and spirituality are deeply annoying to at least those of us who are not convinced simple peasant life is the highest ideal for us to aspire to. In fact I find Tolstoy's spirituality and philosophy so annoying that I feel he needed a good knock on the head and pull on his long beard until it hurt ( too late now, as he passed away long time ago). But I acknowledge his great talent as a writer. But as a guru, like all gurus, his contribution was total rubbish.
