One of my favorites! McLintock! is the 4th pairing of one of the best on-screen couples in movie history, John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.
This Western-Comedy is a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's Taming Of The Shrew. However, to me, McLintock! feels like a slapstick sequel to Red River (1948). While Red River featured one of John Wayne's greatest dramatic performances when he played ruthless cattle baron Thomas Dunson, who was very much like a Captain Bligh of the Old West. In McLintock, John Wayne channels that larger than life cattle baron persona he could do so well, while adding some humor to it, and gives one of his best comedic performances as G.W. McLintock, getting into several Western shenanigans while trying to rekindle his relationship with his wife.
Maureen O'Hara is one of my favorite actresses of all time. O'Hara and Wayne had great chemistry with each other on-screen and were great friends off. To me, Maureen was the perfect fiery red-headed Irish woman that could display feminine toughness and soft charm all in the same scene. Her performances as Kate McLintock and as Mary Kate Danaher in The Quiet Man are perfect examples of that. She could be equally great in an emotional drama like How Green Was My Valley as well. I appreciated seeing Clint Eastwood and Liam Neeson present her with an Honorary Oscar in 2014. It was well-deserved. Maureen was an incredible actress, and a perfect woman.❤️💚
Not to mention the supporting cast in this is stellar. Great Actresses like Yvonne De Carlo and Stefanie Powers. Patrick Wayne(John's son) actually gives a pretty good performance in this. Also Chill Wills, Perry Lopez, Jerry Van Dyke, Strother Martin, Hank Worden, Edgar Buchanan, Bruce Cabot, Bob Steele, some of the greatest character actors ever.
This was produced by Wayne's Batjac company, and was directed by Andrew McLaglen, the son of Victor McLaglen, a great actor himself, friend and often co-star alongside Wayne & O'Hara. And written by James Edward Grant, who often colloborated with Wayne.
Also, I highly recommend all 4 of the other Wayne/O'Hara team-ups. They're all great films and display the great chemistry they had:
.Rio Grande (1950)
.The Quiet Man (1952)
.The Wings Of Eagles (1957)
.Big Jake (1971)
McLintock! is as good as a comedy-tinted Western can get! Thanks again, Cult Cinema Classics!

Oh man! I missed McLintock! I would've loved to be in the chat for this one! I remember watching this as a kid. My siblings and I all moaned and groaned about our parents making us watch it, but by the end we loved it.
