As someone from the uk, actually the reason why its called a chease toastie is because we used to put cheese between 2 peices of toast. Also many brits rumoured it started where people used to put 2 peices of cheese on toast together to make a toasted cheese sandwhich hence the toastie. By putting cheese on unbuttered plain toast and putting it "under the grill" or in a preheated oven for 30 seconds till the cheese has melted. Then you've made yourself a wholesome british snack.

Toast comes from an oven or toaster. Not a pan on a stove. Also grilled cheese = two syllables, cheese toasties = three syllables and therefore grilled cheese is more efficient to say.
