Putting Math to Work
Fundamental research in mathematical sciences has driven core innovations in IT and continues to do so today. Mathematical sciences research is essential to drive innovation across AI, industry, hybrid cloud, quantum, systems, and security.
IBM Research has had a long and rich history in conducting fundamental research in Mathematical Sciences while also driving core innovations in Information Technology based upon breakthrough research in Pure and Applied Mathematics, and Theoretical and Exploratory Computer Science. Today, as the fields of AI and Data Science have become more mainstream, Math Sciences continues to be essential to the work IBM Research is pursing across AI, Industries, Hybrid Cloud, Quantum Computing, Security, and Semiconductor/Systems. Facilitating this research is IBM’s Mathematical Sciences Council, a global team ensuring the vitality and impact of Mathematical Sciences on IBM Research.
Memebers throughout the IBM Research team are using mathematics sciences in their job, pioneering the future of computing through fundamental research in mathematics. Dr. Chid Apte is Chair of the IBM Research Mathematical Sciences Council, the driving force for mathematics at IBM fostering research across the field. Dr. Lior Horesh is working to improve Artificial Intelligence through the development of new principles for devising and analyzing computational algorithms, as well as looking into new potential uses for AI. Dr. Laxmi Parida is using mathematics to investigate large amounts of genomic data, with the aim of better understanding complex diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and various cancers. Dr. Stefan Woerner is working to advance quantum computing, through the creation of quantum algorithms and, the optimization of quantum circuits for use on real quantum hardware.
