I Planted 150 SAFFRON BULBS... Here's what I learned!

This is my 3rd year growing Saffron from the original 24 bulbs that I planted in September 2021.

This year I dug up and divided up my Saffron bulbs into small medium and large.  I know that size makes a difference, and that the flower is already in the bulb when I plant it.  But I wanted to verify this for myself!

AND THE RESULTS-

The blooms started to appear exactly one month after planting the bulbs

The blooms were all done in 3 weeks, and the plants have entered the next phase which is the vegetative grow (the leaves grow long!)

Here are my 3 key takeaways:

Bigger is BETTER for blooms

Blooming continues to disappoint in year 3

Bulb Division continues to exceed expectations

This gives me hope though that I am slowly approaching first year results (I got 24 blooms that first year, then last year I got about 6! This year 18!)

Here are the bloom results:

LARGE:  I planted 18 large bulbs and got 18 blooms (though it was not exactly a 1:1, some produced 2, some none).  All divided vigorously and there were multiple shoots  (5:1 on average) in each location where I planted one bulb.

MEDIUM:  I planted 30 and got one bloom. Again, lots of vigorous division (3:1 shoots).

SMALL:  I planted about 100, not a single bloom, and not much obvious division.

NEXT STEPS:

1) I had applied phosphorus (bone meal) to the root area with the hope that it will aid bulb development.

2) I will now give the plants a weekly dose of nitrogen-rich liquid fertilizer throughout the vegetative growth period, to help with photosynthesis, so those leaves can generate and send energy down to the developing bulbs, so they can grow and create next year's blooms!

3) I am going to try and refrigerate some bulbs prior to replanting next year to see if that makes a difference.  I have also planted some saffron bulbs in-ground this year to see whether leaving them undisturbed helps any over the years.

Follow along as I continue my saffron experiments and adventures! And check out my full-length videos (you know where!!) if you are a visual learner!
