Yamaha Virago Test Ride - 0 to 60 and Full Power Runs

Post maintenance test ride after 6 months of repairs, clean up and a good solid tune up.

1. Adjusted valve clearance and checked compression.
2. Overhauled entire front brakes (piston, calipers, brake lines and master cylinder).
3. Overhauled carbs - ultrasonic cleaning, installed K&L carb kit and properly tuned for altitude (idle fuel jet needle) and synchronized carbs.
4. Replaced Fuel & Air filters.
5. Changed rear differential gear oil.
6. Replaced rubber bushings in rear shocks.
7. Replaced ignition coils, caps and plugs.

The bike is running like new. It starts right up without choke and idles perfectly. There is no backfiring, no hesitation or misfires and it pulls like a tractor. In comparison to today's bikes, the acceleration is almost laughable, but that's not what the Virago was designed for. Yeah, it's not a speed demon, but it still holds its own for a 37 year old V-twin that was booked in at 68hp.

A little bit of care goes a long way with these old bikes and this one seems to be pretty happy with how it is all set up and properly tuned. I checked the plugs after the bike had cooled and they are both showing a perfect even brown burn - plugs never lie! Pretty happy that I've been able to get it back to a reasonable state. My app showed that my 0-60 time was just over 5 seconds.

Other maintenance done so far:

- Replaced seat cover
- Repaired instrument lighting
- Repaired low fuel level system (fuel tank sensor)
- Repaired fuel tank connector/wire
- Repaired fuel pump wire
- General cleaning and restoring

I had an 84 700 that i bought in 2010. Got it running and rode the hell out of it. I'd strap a tent and sleeping bag to the seat and take off every other weekend. Took a solo loop through the south, 3300 miles. Unfortunately it started needing more work than i could do without a garage so i sold it to a friend rather than just letting it sit. I miss that bike like crazy.

My uncle has this exact bike. Same color and everything. It's been sitting for years and has under 13k original miles! unbelievable. He recently had some maintenance done to get it up and running again but seems to be having fuel issues.

It's not a sportbike, it's designed for higway and street travel. Not racing, not track day, not dirt. It's excellent at what it's made for. If I got another cruiser, I'd consider a Virago.

Had a 1998 virago 750. Shaft drive . Sweet bike.loved riding it never let me down. Got stolen. Now a honda shadow 750. I'd trade it for the virago any day. Both good bikes.

Hi there from uk Norfolk, nice ride out and speed you got, I have the 750 from 1993 and love these bikes, I have put a black widow exhaust on mine without jetting it up, it’s been running fine for 3 years, but I am getting exhaust backfire on deceleration have tried new filter, plugs, balance the carbs, but still pop on deceleration so am going to put up with it for now, I did strip carbs down and new jets and gaskets about 4 years ago, so it might want to be stripped down again, keep riding safe .

I have one 700 1985 for free, new batery, single carb conversion ( i made it ) and runs Great 😅

Think all your work has paid substantial gains in getting her back in riding trim. Have you done the sync on the carbs? The little devils in all the details kind of thing. Five point five to 60 mph may not be blistering, but fast enough for a thirty plus years Yamaha Cruiser that just came out of hibernation is great. Thanks for sharing.

Had a 750 and 1100. Although they weren't particularly fast either could smoke most harleys of the day even ridingg two-up. Which was quite satisfying especially when the hd boys would call them yamaha-ha-ha's
