Don't pop that champagne cork like that! Does your cork fly across the room or shower your guest in foam? This is how you properly open a champagne bottle shown by a professional bartender. Don't ever be afraid of popping that bottle open again!

It has to be “as quiet as a nuns fart”

Many years ago I had to open a second bottle of champagne for a customer because they did not hear the pop. The owner wanted them happy and I did too.

What he didn't mention is when the cork loosens up enough to want to pop out you push down on it just enough for it to slowly come out of the bottle. Honestly way more important than any of this

In Russia we do it opposite way: loud bang and a flying out cork, that hits the ceiling.

Wait, I thought I had to pop it and spray it all over the place while being really obnoxious! You learn something new every day!

I always just grab a kitchen towel, wrap it around the top of the bottle, put on sunglasses (for protection), close my eyes (for extra protection), and hope for the best!

I worked on a champagne bar during university summer holidays and had to open anywhere from 50-100 bottles per day. When you open that many it does a number on the skin on your hands. I would always remove the cage, then hold the cork and rotate the bottle, otherwise you tear your hands to shreds. Even without the cage you still can get painful calluses forming just from the friction of holding the cork although it can be mitigated by use a cloth.

Doing it as shown here would be awful, cage still on, no cloth in sight. It's not just being fancy to use a cloth, it's necessary. You can also use the cloth to wipe the condensation on the bottle so your hands don't end up wet all the time.

I also got to open baltzahars and nebuchadnezzars, which were great fun to open, often needing two people.
