Mary was not only the ancestral matriarch of the British royal family, but of the founders of the United States as well. Her grand daughter, Anne Knollys (from Mary's daughter Catherine Carey) married Thomas West, Baron De la Warr & their sons, Thomas, John & Francis were among the founders & first governors of the colony of Virginia (another son, Nathaniel, was also a Virginia colonist). The US state of Delaware is named for Anne's eldest son, Thomas, who inherited the De la Warr title.
