If taken literally this reminds of 'changelings' where infants are replaced by 'fairies' who eventually grow up 'strange'

Love the creepy factor of this. If told from outside perspective it would just be about a monster eating rabbits and kids. But having the pov of the monster there is a uncomfortable sympathy with this creature who feels alone and scared. That sympathy is cut with lines that hit at a deeper sinister nature, like “struggling only makes the huge much tighter” it serves as a preferred version of the comfort the monster needs.

All around a fantastic song and video.

I'm late as shit to this, but I honestly think the thing about the baby being abandoned in the woods isn't exactly right. We see the crib, the view being from a child, with the mobile hanging above. We see this at the beginning AND at the end. At the end, we see it begin to fade in and out, with a vague reddish tint. This imagery is coupled with a wet, slimey sound, conveniently matching the beat of the song. But that sound is awfully reminiscent of a heart beating - a heart that slows and stops. This implies that the infant died in the crib, not in the woods.
I think the Thing was in fact an infant, but one that was unfortunately claimed by SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Sometimes babies just fucking die. No reason. They're safe, comfortable, they're watched and taken care of, but they still just die. It's sad. There's no medical reason we've found for it. The Thing was an infant that died unexpectedly for no reason, and came back as a shambling mass. Is it a ghost? Who knows.
This does leave the question as to why it's in the woods, and I don't exactly have much of an answer. Maybe it slithered away from home? Or maybe it woke up long after the house it died in was torn down? Or maybe it was just an artistic decision? Who knows. In any case, this song still slaps two years later.

This reminds me of those stories about changeling creatures that steal a child's identity and lives for a certain amount of time being cared for by the humans. There's also a bird that does this (not change appearance, just tricks a different bird to care for it), forgot what it was called tho.

Edit: It doesn't happen with one bird, it's called brood parasitism apparently.

Honestly I love how this is like if someone wrote a child’s story and steampianist came and made it morbid.

All these years passed, but...
*Can we talk about the fact that Oliver sounds so real and cute in this song?*

I got a theory for this song :3
Ok so I think it is about a baby who was abandoned in the forest outside of their family’s house, and died without ever really being able to experience much life, so they turned into the ‘Thing’ hence why it starts out in the forest. I believe this abandoned baby had a brother also and the people who take care of the child sang lullaby’s to him while the baby was left outside. Babies are curious and most of the time thinks of other living beings as ‘friends’ therefore the rabbits that also live in the forest as ‘friends’. The ‘Thing’ is jealous, sad, and confused about how other living things get so much love, and what aspects about them help them to be loved. Wanting to have the love that it never had, the ‘Thing’ wants those aspects of its ‘friends’. And it continues to try to take their appearances, trying to do the impossible and come back to life to receive the good parts of life the baby was never able to experience. It loves them like a baby would, but it wants life more. And continues killing them (including its past brother) in hopes of being able to come back alive and be loved.
(That’s at least what I got from the song :P)

I think this song is about a sociopathic child. The coldness that the creature feels is just his lack of humanity. When he sings to the rabbits about wanting to be like them and having their features, it is him envying being "normal", the rabbits representing the masses. He ends up sucking them into his misery, which is illustrated as him eating them. The boy that the creature devours at the end is the only human in the story. So, he must be the sociopath's image of what the ideal person would be. When he consumes that boy, he is trying to imitate and adopt his behaviors, which ultimately ruins their relationship and hurts the boy. This is kind of a half-baked theory, though. :3

This is such a good song! It reminds me a bit of your older songs but your tuning style is distinctly different now (for the better). The PV is also beautiful and creepy as always! Time to listen to this on my way to classes like a weirdo.

It’s crazy how vocaloids can have more emotion in their voice than real singers

As I go over this song, I feel like its lyrics have an undeniable resemblance to the case of the "Chalava". So, this will be a little uncomfortable or triggering to some people.

According to some Indian legends, when an unborn child dies and does not go through the proper rituals to depart from this world, their soul remains in the earth. Since the spirit was an unborn child, it could not have a proper form, and so they take any form that they can, which is usually evil. But remember, the spirit of the Chalava is still a little child. They have the desires of love, family and companionship like all children. But early unborn children lack proper development of organs. So like the blob of darkness shown in the music video, maybe this Chalava died at a really early stage of life - too early to have organs like hands, hair or eyelids - let alone tear glands. And for that reason, it envies children who have these. Basically, this song is about this spirit of an unborn child wanting to be like other children, in that case.

Tbh I relate to the Thing because I was just so clingy to other children my age as a child to the point that they were worried and creeped out. All I ever was to be was like them, to act normal and to act like a good kid. But they all always kept going away from me back then, and I always felt it was my fault, even though I was just trying my best to be a friend.

Here’s my theory on this song:
(Trigger warning)

So basically where it all starts is with a young single woman who had an unwanted pregnancy, and gave birth to what she hoped would be a baby girl, but it was a boy. I think that this song is set in the early 1900s where ultrasounds weren’t invented and children spent most of their days playing outside or in the woods, hence the reason why the child meets the rabbits in the woods.

“A distant lullaby, dying from my side.”
This indicates that the mother is not there for her child as she is not ready and doesn’t want to take care of him, and leaves him in his cradle alone.
A distant lullaby could indicate that the mother is singing to herself elsewhere in the house, and how the child wishes she could sing to him instead of leaving him alone. Thus the child sees his mother’s presence as dying, or as if the mother is dead because she is not around. This could be correct, because you see a cradle with a mobile above it, and no one is to be seen. This could probably mean you are looking from the baby’s point of view.

“A glow is amiss, fleeting from my side.”
This is basically how children usually idolise their parents, seeing them as something amazing, like a glowing light. The glow could represent the mother, running away from her duties as a parent, or, it could represent how the mother’s glowing eyes don’t ever look into her child’s, therefore they are fleeting from the side of the cradle. You see eyes in the forest, so the child could visualise his life as a dark forest, and his mother’s eyes the only light that can’t really be seen. The eyes are on a blob though, so this could represent how the mother views her child, as the eyes look sad.

“Alone in a cruel world, leaves me cold and curled.”
(The child is at least 8 now).
This could mean how the child feels alone because he has no friends due to his appearance, as his mother does not care for him, and the society that they live in won’t accept the “lower class”. And it could mean that he feels alone due to no family around, since the mother is not present often, and there is no father and siblings to keep the child company.
Humans usually curl up for warmth, as the mother neglects the child she probably wouldn’t tuck him in when he goes to sleep, so he curls up to keep himself warm.

“But then, friends, warmth.”
The child is wandering through the woods at night, and he sees two rabbits, so he views them as friends because they don’t run away from him. He plays with the rabbits and starts to attempt to take care of them, but it would be a disaster, because he was never taught how to look after others, his mother being a bad example of this. He strokes the rabbits and experiences warmth for the first time, and he feels welcome in the woods.

“A glow returned once more it seems.”
This could mean that the look he is giving is being returned by the rabbits, as they are looking at him in a way he thinks a mother should.

“I want hair like yours, I want hands like yours.”
This is pretty obvious, as he is talking to the rabbits and wishing to have adorable features like them. The child begin to think that the way he look is why his mother doesn’t love him, so he decides to stay with the rabbits to imitate their looks.

The second verse is the opposite of the first one, because he now feels at home with the rabbits,

Skip a few seconds...

“Don’t struggle, there is no point.”
The child has become so desperate to be love he grabs the rabbit suddenly and strangles it. That’s why he says struggling only makes hugs tighter, indicating that he will only squeeze harder if the rabbit continues to struggle. He finally kills it and wears the hide over his shoulders. (Kids are dumb, what did you expect?) he says to the rabbit that it will never be alone, as he thinks it will go to heaven and be happy, whilst giving him what he “needs” to be loved by his mother.

“From now, friends, warmth.”
He thinks that he will have friends and warmth because he is wearing a white rabbit hide, and that will gain him attention, however it only made others hate him even more for killing an innocent animal.

The child goes back to the house to show his mother but the mother is nowhere to be found, until the child enters he bedroom and finds her hanging from the ceiling. She had killed herself due to mass amounts of stress being a young single mother. That’s why the song depicts bloodied hands, and the child’s eye widened in shock to see his mother dead.

The end of the song you see the cradle again but tinted red, which could mean the child is thinking back to how his mother treated him as a baby, therefore he thinks she deserves it.
This is just my theory and it’s kind of weird but I hope you enjoyed!

I know I’m hella late but oh well.

"Thing" Lyrics

a distant lullaby, dying from my sight
a glow is amiss, fleeting from my side
oh why, oh why
alone in a cruel world
leaves me cold and curled

but then
friends
warmth
eyes that gleam
a glow returned once more it seems

I want hair like yours
I want hands like yours
I want fingers that curl in the cold like yours

I want eyes to stare
And to cry
When I'm feeling scared like you
Just like you

Soft lullabies, never leave my side
Glowing warm fur and gleaming round eyes
Isolated no more
My friends
Don't struggle there is no point
You'll never be alone

From now
Friends
Warmth
Never leave
Struggling only makes the hugs much tighter

I want hair like yours, hands like yours
Fingers that curl in the cold like yours
I want eyes to stare
And to cry when I'm feeling scared
like you

I want hair like yours, hands like yours
Fingers that curl in the cold like yours
I want eyes to stare
And to cry when I'm feeling scared
like you
