I was looking for comparative information about these two steels and was elated to see your channel pop up.

The edge bevel is small due to how thin behind the edge is post regrind. Is probably ~15°per side already

I use basswood exclusively for stropping (with Gunny Juice), and it’s fantastic. I think youll love it

Gunny of gunny juice recommended sanding the basswood with 800 grit sand paper.

I put two rex 45 natives on my tsprof and, took the edge back WAY back to about 10 dps w no micro bevel, and was blown away by performance. Each blade was around 60 bess.

Thanks for the update. Interesting fact that steel types out of different production lines, differ that much in their characteristics. As you mentioned you usually put a 15° angle on, both of these steels should work very well with that in terms of edge retention. And, no you don't

I know this is an older video, but you inspired me to get a Delica wharncliffe in K390 before they’re gone. Do you use edci or any other preservative on your carbon steel to keep them rust free? Thanks.

Hey Erica, the thinner edge of a reground knife should strop back easier than the thicker edge of a factory ground blade. This is because there's a smaller surface area in contact with the strop, so the strop can remove material faster. I think what you're seeing is the hardness difference between the K390 and Rex 45, and the Rex is just slightly too hard for the compound in your strop.

And speaking of which, I haven't checked the tracking on your strop, but it should be delivered any day now. I get my basswood at Hobby Lobby, and I use my laser to cut it and mark it. Because they're cheap and a good portable size, I have them stashed all over the place.

Basswood, and balsa both work really well for stropping, but I still prefer kangaroo leather. I love the way it feels, and the results I get from it. Also, CBN and diamond emulsions are my favorite, especially with the higher end steels!

It does seem odd to me how different Spyderco factories have different results in how their steels are treated. For whatever reason it sounds like Golden is better with American Steels, while Seki is better with the foreign steels.

Have you ever broke the scales on a delica/endela/endura I carry my endura in k390 but am a little hesitant to beatvon it ? I do notice that the k390 strops up really easy .

Wore out the dogs and let them sleep, no dog tails tonight.
My Endela is Seki City K390 but don't have any Rex 45 handy. How about Colt 45?

Ya'll find a new place yet? Wishing the best for you.

basswood is a great for stropping, also a great for wood whittling. Don't try to build furniture out of it.

I don't have any knives in Rex-45 yet but the K390 on my Endela wharncliffe is not as impressive as I was expecting the M4 on my Tenacious outperforms it.

Rex 45 is high HRC and contains less vanadium than m4 but contains cobalt to give it its high hrc, m4 doesn't have cobalt, spydercos runs its rex 45 at around 66 to 67 hrc from the testing I've seen, and m4 at around 64 hrc, the k390 from spydercos was testing around 63 to 64 hrc from what I've seen, which was a little disappointing, but it has a really high carbide percentage, k390 has 9% vanadium with a carbide volume fraction of around 17% carbides, so the rex 45 is going to be higher HRC and tougher than k390, but k390 will have better edge retention, the red 45 is going to be less toothy because of this, I stop at 300 grit with rex45 hone the burr on the diamond as much as possible, take as few passes on a balsa strop with 3 micron diamond gunny juice, this stropping takes the tooth away, so I hit it back on the 300 grit diamond stone with some light passes, enough to bring the tooth back but not bring a burr back up, my rex 45 ends up screaming sharp with a light toothiness, it has great edge retention this way with great strength, but some people like more toothiness to there working edges, but I promise if you do it this way it will have excellent working performance, my k390 takes a nice, normal 600 to 800 grit toothy working edge, hope this helps

I really prefer the disassembly of the native 5 over the delica or any of the Japanese line. Engineer’s Perspective folding of a washer on the recent video shows how careful you have to be on those models.
