Worst part about this, he could have had an ACL reconstruction and been ready to play in college the next year. Back then they immobilized you for a bit and the recovery time was longer, but it wasn’t an uncommon injury. Whatever college that wanted him would have still taken a chance. Obviously playing again didn’t help. I tore mine in 1989, even with how they did it then in six months I was running and came back stronger and just as fast. In 1997 I tore my other knee, I was back on the court in four months.

Course now I’m 50, and after two ACL reconstructive surgeries on my right knee I just had a total knee replacement. But a year out I’m pain free and heavy into cycling and weight training.

I actually cried at this scene. I did feel bad for boobie. I felt bad for the doctor because he was trying to explain to him that he did serious damage to his knee and that he can't play football anymore and boobie was going off on him.

bitter scene and even that exchange of words is a stark contrast when the doctor tells him about his son playing for midland then being a premed, while Boobie is about to receive news that he can't play football anymore, everything he's been groomed for was centered around it.

The doc was just beating around the bush too much. He should have just explicitly said "You have a torn ACL, this is going to put you out for the season, end of story." Miles probably would have understood that. Even in 1988, it was common knowledge that an ACL tear is a season ending injury every time. Surely someone as obsessed with football as Miles would know that.

Also there's no way any coach would just take a player's word for it that he's fine after an injury like that. He'd be required to get written authorization from a doctor for sure.

Boobie: "Who's paying you?"
Doc: "The insurance companies. They pay a lot actually."

I love that movie. I loved that they didn't win the championship but they gave it everything they had. Billy Bob character shudnt have nver let him play without talking to doc directly. He cud have caused that boy to never walk right

His acting is superb. Especially the scene when him and his dad were in the car and he realized he wasn't going to go to the pros. It really broke my heart I did. The acting was phenomenal What a wonderful job he did even though it crushed me to see a young man in agony like that

The real story of booby is unfortunately much sadder. It’s a great acting job but booby mentally and emotionally was closer to a child than a high schooler.

Boobie is based on the real life James "Boobie" Miles, an incredible standout player for the Permian Panthers. This movie is close to my heart - I played at Ratliff stadium all through high school, and in marching band. MOJO baby!
