This Is Wonderful News If You Use The Internet

"Over the last few months, things have been looking good for keeping the Internet open to everyone. A little too good, as far as Congress is concerned, which is why members and the corporate lobbyists who write them hefty checks have launched a last-ditch legislative effort to scuttle net neutrality.

Both President Obama and Federal Communications Commission Chair Tom Wheeler have stopped tiptoeing around net neutrality and seem to finally embrace the idea of using Title II of the Telecommunications Act to reclassify Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and regulate them as common carriers, like the phone companies and other public utilities. No preferential treatment to those willing to shell out big corporate bucks for a fast lane.

In early January, Wheeler told a crowd at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, "There's a way to do Title II right." And in his State of the Union address, Barack Obama announced, "I intend to protect a free and open Internet, extend its reach to every classroom, and every community, and help folks build the fastest networks so that the next generation of digital innovators and entrepreneurs have the platform to keep reshaping our world."

No doubt those more than four million public comments filed with the Federal Communications Commission in support of net neutrality went a long way toward convincing Obama and Wheeler that the American people have made up their minds. "* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

I'll believe it when I see it. Nothing Obama *SAYS* matters. What matters is what Obama *DOES*.

I am republican and I am for net neutrality. I understand that net neutrality has some anti-repub ideology. like more goverment and regulation ect... However there is a reason for government.

"This is wonderful news if you use the internet."
Oh that's cute, you titled that knowing that you are an internet news channel.
Btw, can you do that pros and cons thing more often on other issues? It's pretty cool, super clear, and also pretty interesting to see who's for us and against us. Thumbs this up if you'd like Cenk to do the chart more often. He says he actually reads the comments so - democracy.

Access to information is pivotal to democracy. Net Neutrality ensures that people have access to all forms of information. Taking that away is like shutting down the libraries.

I'm fine with anything. Just nothing that interferes with my porn. I'll be alright.

At this point, whether or not Net Neutrality stays is moot point. Once Google Fiber comes to all major cities, people are gonna be leaving Comcast droves once they realizing that Comcast has _not_ been giving them high-speed internet at all.

I'm not an atheist but Christopher Hitchens famously used to say "good people will do the best that they can and bad people will do the worst that they can. In order to get moral people to act in immoral ways, you need religion." I agree with him, however there is something else that coerces usually moral people to act in unusually immoral ways, and that is the promise of money.

Wow, I had no idea just how little value American citizens are to the government. I knew money governed the nation, but this is mind blowing! Its even more mind blowing when the countries citizens still preach that they belong to the greatest country in the world as if everything that's happening will somehow benefit them.

The reason this won is because Google spends more money on lobbying than Comcast does.

basically this will raise your internet bill. Which is why the phone company charges so much in taxes and regulations.

If your country established a mesh network, the FCC, ISP and the government(s) could not take control of the internet, their say would be almost completely irrelevant. Not to mention Internet would be free as in cost nothing to use.
