Wherever young Joe Biden went, his little sister Valerie was sure to follow. She would eventually run her brother's campaigns for the U.S. Senate and his first two bids for the presidency. Valerie Biden Owens talks with CBS News' Norah O'Donnell about "Growing Up Biden," a memoir of her family's story of tragedy, sorrow, resilience and purpose, and why she believes President Biden is the right person at the right time for the job.

That's telling Norah, for sure. She hasn't spent all that time with Joe, during his career in politics, like Valerie has.

One thing that nobody can doubt about the president is that he loves his family fiercely. Yes, of course, there's a lot of controversy, but any time President Biden discusses his family, his eyes light up. I don't know if this has any bearing on his effectiveness as president. What I do know is that the adversity that he has faced in his life, with the overwhelming sorrow of losing a wife, a daughter, and a son, has made him into an empath. I do not place the responsibility for mending the wounds of the country on the president's shoulders. He cannot do it alone. Unfortunately, I don't think that the United States wants a gentleman to be president anymore. Our discourse has coarsened. We have become meaner, more caustic. We are suspicious of goodness when we see it. Do I agree with his policies? I would say it depends on the issue. Another unfortunate aspect of our modern culture is that we do not judge our political figures on a case-by-case basis. If we agree with them, we love them and agree with them on everything. If we disagree, we hate them and disagree with them on everything. We need to move past this immaturity.

Being president is not easy. Especially now. People are so disrespectful. Even congress. If I was disruptive or disrespectful to my boss, I wouldn’t have a job. It seems as though the people in congress do not wake up thinking, how can I help the American people today?…It’s more like, what kind of awesome insults can I tweet today?…everyone bashes President Biden, but at least when he speaks, he lets us know what is going on and not how his golf game went, or how big his crowds were, or how smart he is (that one makes me chuckle). Anyway, I hope when people vote they take into consideration who actually works and who just likes to google themselves and/or tweets insults during working hours 😒
