One of the hardest programming assignments I had in college was to write a tic tac toe game.  The player could either move first or second, the game could never lose, and it had to declare when the cat won.  I had to figure out that start-in-a-corner stuff all by myself.

As a person who apparently challenged half my old classmates to a Tic Tac Toe match and has almost never lost (win or tie), I learned of some amazing tricks like the "double trouble" (maximum 2 ways to connect 3) and the "triple trouble" (maximum 3 ways to connect 3, which is this one right here, you can connect a maximum of 3 if your opponent goes bottom-right and bottom-middle), and how to counter said tricks. All you have to do is "cancel" their triple trouble by placing on a spot that forces them to block you

Now you cancelled their "triple trouble", forces you into a TIE, unless you mess up really badly

I always aim for the center as my first move so that all my opponent’s moves are defense if I go first. Now I know that there’s a use to using that move on the 2nd turn

As a Tic Tac Toe proffessional, I can say this is the tactic I use all my fights and teached my friends. After my friends learned it all our fights were just ties, so I can say this tactic does not work if the opponent does it too

I've figured this out years ago and I've never lost using this strategy. Even if my opponent went first I figured out (as long they don't use the same strategy) I could still win doing it right. The thing with tic tac toe is basically predicting the possibilities and narrowing them down to your advantage, which would most likely let you win, as long as the opponent isn't trying to do the same. One of my friends eventually learned this too, but I learned how to counter it. Whenever I do counter it, I can't really win, but tie the game instead and keep repeating it until they stop using the same strategy, allowing me to win in the long run. I've also learned other ways to checkmate my opponent but I kinda forgot how to pull them off.

My grandma sends me this electronic Christmas advent calendar every year. It’s really cool and they have this tic tac toe game where I had to try and beat the AI. I spent years doing this and eventually I figured out how to win (or at least draw) every game I ever played. So 5 year old me teaching myself this stuff from my grandma’s advent calendar, wow it seems crazy when you say it that way.
