When the pressure increases the amount/yield of ammonia increases as the equilibrium moves to the side with fewer molecules, favouring the forward direction. The forward reaction is exothermic, so an increased temperature lowers the yield of ammonia and is expensive, whereas a lower temperature decreases the rate of reaction. So a compromise of 450 degrees Celsius is used. Iron is used as a catalyst, speeding up the rate of reaction by providing an alternative reaction pathway which lowers the activation energy so a lower temperature can be used.
