Is nationalism in China rising? If so, how does it influence Beijing's external behavior? As tensions with the US increase, will nationalism become an important force shaping Chinese policymaking? Please join Freeman Chair in China Studies Jude Blanchette for a discussion on the role of Chinese nationalism in the 21st century with Jessica Chen Weiss, Associate Professor of Government at Cornell University and Senior Associate (Non-resident) at the Freeman Chair.

This event is made possible through CSIS general funds.

The US could learn a lot from Chinese nationalism. There are too many traitors from the Chinese community in the US and some nationalism to enforce loyalty on these fifth columnists would really be welcomed and even needed. For example the United States government could look at how the the Chinese government uses Chinese nationalism to cleanse Xinjiang of the Uighurs or use Chinese nationalism to support its war policy against Taiwan and apply that to deal with the Chinese problem in California

It seems like Chinese nationalism would make the case for restricting or even banning investments and possibly immigration from China. If Chinese nationalism is such a big force among the population and the population generally supports Chinese nationalism then it is fair game for Western countries to respond in kind. Loyalty isn’t something you can measure so blanket bans will have to do however unfortunate that may be

Starts at 28:48.

Very thoughtful discussion, a rare chance to think about the Chinese politics rather than just take sides of "I ❤️ China, down with the enemies at home and abroad!", or I ❤️ democracy, down with the CCP and its minions!".

1. Currently, it is the US who is anxious to change China's "system", not the other way around. China doesn't feel threatened enough for the need to change the US system. It is more confident of the 2 due to its much better relationship with and more abundant trust and support from its people.
2. The amount of trust between Chinese and their government is the result of an unwritten CONTRACT and decades of a repeated loop of promises made>result delivered>new promises made>delivered... Statistics have shown that Chinese are not the most gullible of mankind, so to think that these shrewdest of minds are slaves/prisoners of the CCP, incapable of critical thinking, is just laughable.
3. Interactions and relationships between government and citizens are a virtuous rather than evil cycle in China: Better leadership/statesmanship > more trust and support from the people > even better governance. In America, it is turning into a vicious 4-year cycle resulting in ever-worsening terms of leadership Reagan>B>C>B>O>Trump.

One more piece of the puzzle might help you to see the whole picture: China is at a different stage of its evolution compared to current US society. Though some of the things you observe in China are skewed by the way US media and journalists report, the perceived political and religious oppression, the fear of gov't, etc. even if true, were once much more severe in American history and only corrected later through civil movement. As far as modern society is concerned, China is at an earlier stage compared to the US and still feeling its way around, only that China most likely will choose to address these concerns later on through better statesmanship/governance rather than massive-scale civil movements of 1.4 billion people (which can be scary). Remember, modern Chinese history is only less than 3 quarters of a century long.
