It's not that people are being told that they need to be rich to be happy, it's that they're being told they need to be rich to even have a standard of living to begin with.

First rule for the working
NEVER go to war for the ruling class, do not allow your children to go to war for the bankers.
Modest prosperity is enough.

I think a lot of people want to be rich just to feel safe. It can’t buy you happiness. But it can buy you a great deal of freedom from concern.

It’s not about not buying the hype about being rich. The hype is true. It’s about buying the possibility. Buying into the myth that hard work = success. It doesn’t. Rich and successful people and millionaires talk about how hard they’ve worked, and they probably have - but that’s a small factor. You need luck, chance, probably knowing the right people - things most of us have no hope of having. If hard work paid most, nurses and labourers would be the millionaires not bankers

If you work fulltime 5 days a week you should be able to afford to live in the country you live in.

Gary Stevenson is a very important voice, and provides great perspective.
We have so-called 'Zero Hours Contracts' in England, where the rich can keep the peasants on a leash and feed them crumbs. These contracts would be illegal in any decent society that is not run by the rich for the rich.

In the past decade, I've really come to understand this is true. So comforting to hear Gary share here. I'm glad he's here. So glad he's here.

Right answer mate. You don't need to be rich to be happy. The happiest days of my life were when i was young and poor and free. Now i have enough money but im old and all it provides is a sense of security, not joy.

I like this dude doesn't try to say he worked hard or is working hard. To some degree many of us fall ass backwards into success. Right place right time. I could tell another person to do the same and it may not work even if they run it perfectly, better than I did or could. Window is just not there. Having dignity should not be a matter of luck or even struggle in the modern age. It is totally senseless if not outright evil.

I love what Gary says about being “proud of yourself, like my mom and Dad”

This guy GETS it!
What they NEVER tell the masses in history is that ALL systems since the beginning of man have been designed to have power (including wealth) in the hands of only a few...
The closest we came to changing this was Lenin, but Stalin and his other successors proved that human greed was greater than the interests of the many.

Today even, look at WHO makes the most money. It's usually the people who DON'T actually build, or work manually. They create the laws and hold the money. (Doctors may the the only modern exception to this rule - regardless of capitalism, communism, fascism, feudalism, and so on).

On the business news they were advertising an new app to organise your expensive wine collection that is a perfect example of the inequality in the uk. Food banks, homelessness or rearranging your expensive wine collect

I think most people don't want to get rich. They just want to be able to retire.
And if you're not rich enough, it would be really hard for you to retire.

Most of us dont want to be rich...we just want to have a home, healthy food, family, a few close friends, safe/supportive communities.

He's says that the current tax system is rigged... workers pay tax wages (in the UK, "PAYE"), whereas the super rich (as a percentage of income, mainly from owning assets), pay next to nothing. The rich are buying ALL assets, e.g. your Mum's house, which keeps prices of assets high - despite wages not climbing at the same rate. If we don't do something about Wealth Distribution, we will fully return to a feudal society (think Mumbai, if you've ever been there?)
