A review of my old Myford ML8 woodturning lathe.

Disclamer: I do not recommend any of the methods/techniques I use as these could be unsafe. Woodturning is a potentially hazerdous activity and it is your responsibility to use proper methods/techniques and follow appropriate health and safety practices.

Very useful information to someone who has just inherited Their Grandfather lathe and can't to get stuck in i.e. me. It has the original belt which I feel would need to be upgraded so If you have any recommendations for a replacement belt I would be grateful.

Can you do a video showing how to remove and switch out the tool rest assembly and the tail stock assembly? Or direct me to a link that shows that? Much thanks!

Andrew, could you advise how much oil is required for the bearings in the headstock. Should I be able to see oil or are few drops occasionally all that is required? Ian

How much did it cost new? Used value?

Hi Andrew, can you tell me how it is that your locking lever/handles are so new? My lathe tailstock and toolrest levers are older versions and have some unwanted movement in them and yours seem rock solid. Thank you, Matt.

Hi Andrew Thanks for posting. I just got one of these as my first venture into wood turning. I am curious to know where you got the levers for the locking nuts. Mine is missing these and can’t source them anywhere.

Andrew, thanks for the review and very helpful as I shall be collecting my late Fathers lathe very shortly. Have you used the morticing attachment? Regards. Ian

Thanks for sharing this.

I'm someone who wants to get into turning and I've been looking at buying some used equipment. From research it seems like this is a very well regarded lathe and I'd feel better buying a used one like this over a cheaper quality model new lathe.

My question is chucks - please forgive me if this is a silly question but those spindle thread sizes seem to be different from more modern lathes, is it difficult to find chucks to fit the ML8 or is there some sort of adaptor solution to allow more modern chucks to fit?

Thanks!

Hi Andrew, can you tell me why you mainly used the two slowest speeds on the ml8? I know that my reason would be because it is a real pain changing the belt over on the pulleys. Other than that it is a great machine.

Hello ! I've got a myford M8 identical to the one you have, can you recommend a steady rest?

Thank you for sharing your review of the Myford Ml8, sad that you sold it, but I understand :) Question, what oil did you use for the bearings on your Ml8. Thanks

So tempted by one of these. Someone’s selling one for £250 next to where I live. Shame I’m in a 1 bed flat...
