From a guy with over 40 criminal jury trials, and hundreds of bench trials, who spent 19 years in criminal law, I can tell you that everything you and Tiffany describe about Sam is just a classic criminal mentality. He’s got more education than the average street thug, obviously, but they’re really not that far apart.

He’ll never see it, though. That, too, is a part of their blindness.

Tiffany is right-- Sam believes in effective altruism because he thinks he's the smartest person around and therefore knows what should be done with the world. Of course, he didn't even know how to run a crooked business. BUT the other believers in effective altruism are exactly the same.
