When SR-71 Flew Over Israel In 1972 #shorts

In October 1973, Israel put its Jericho nuclear-tipped missiles on high alert in case of war with its Arab neighbors, but the missiles had problem with their guidance system. Instead of hitting Cairo, they would hit Tel Aviv. The CIA wasn't sure whether this deployment was real or just a hoax, so they decided to use their Mach 3 aircraft over the Middle East. An SR-71 blackbird took off from America on a 10-hour round-trip mission to verify Israel’s nuclear activation. The Blackbird took off from Beale Air Force Base in California, refueled over Spain, and then flew over Syria, Jordan, and finally Israel. This mission took five air-to-air refuelings, for which America deployed sixteen KC-135s. The Israelis sent multiple F-4 Phantoms to shoot down the SR-71, but they were unable to catch the blackbird flying at 80,000 feet. President Nixon wanted to find out whether the Arabs and the Israelis had really moved back from the front line like they said they had. So SR-71 went over there, took the imagery, came back, and showed photographic proof that they were both lying. This ended the Yom Kippur War."

1974/1975... I was stationed at Camp Foster on Okinawa. Quite often I would watch the SR-71 take off and land at Kadena Air Force Base.

I was born on Beale AFB and my father was in the Air Force as an air traffic controller for the blackbirds. He also did 3 tours in Vietnam as a combat controller attached to army units, survived a helicopter crash there, one of two survivors, and was a forward air traffic controller as air crew that conducted nuclear bomb testing on Alaskan Aleutian chain islands. RIP father.
