The U.S. slapped a new round of sanctions on Chinese firms that it accuses of aiding alleged oppression of Uyghurs or helping Beijing's military of such human rights abuses.
This is further escalating tensions after the U.S. and some of its allies decided to boycott the Beijing games.
For details let's turn to our Kim Ji-yeon.
The U.S. has expanded its sanctions on Chinese technology to include semiconductors, artificial intelligence, the bio sector as well as fifth-generation internet connectivity.
On Thursday The U.S. has slapped sanctions on firms it accuses of aiding alleged human rights abuses in China's Xinjiang Province the technology sector widely seen as the front line in growing China, U.S. tensions.
Once companies are on the sanctions list, American firms and individuals are banned from investing in them,... which can be a major obstacle to obtaining overseas funding to grow their business.
The new sanctions affect 19 Chinese entities that the Biden administration sees as related to the alleged human rights abuses... or as having ties to the Chinese government's military or surveillance operations.
They include artificial intelligence companies like SenseTime, and supercomputer maker Dawning Information Industry.
Also, citing their alleged role in the oppression of ethnic Uyghurs, the Commerce Department added China's Academy of Military Medical Sciences and its 11 research institutes to a list of entities that are not allowed to receive exports of American technology.
Aside from China, the U.S. Commerce Department also took action against entities in Georgia, Malaysia, and Turkey for allegedly "diverting or attempting to divert U.S. items to Iran’s military programs."
It's widely believed that the expansion of U.S. sanctions and trade restrictions could worsen the already rocky relations between Beijing and Washington the U.S. and some of its Western allies having already decided not to send diplomats to the Beijing Olympic Games next year in protest against China's alleged human rights abuses.
U.S. sanctions on Chinese tech giants started in 2019 with Huawei,... as it was rising to the top in terms of global 5G internet connectivity,... but now it's struggling to obtain core components like semiconductors.

Now I realized allegations carry more weight than proven beyond reasonable doubts in the US. Innocent until proven guilty no longer valid, it's guilty until proven innocent. This create a dangerous prescedence. Is this the future of international relations??
