Alongside the new MacBook Air and iPad Pro, Apple also announced a new update to the Mac Mini and in this video, we unbox it and go hands on with this powerful little machine.

Very curious about video editing. Can it fluidly run a 5k display without the egpu? How does FCPX performance compare to an iMac pro or recent MBP? Does the Mac get exceedingly hot or loud when editing, or just on export? How does it perform thermally when doing a long/intensive export? I’m thinking along the lines of a ~20 minute 4K project.

With the 2018 mini, you can get 3x 4K displays via 2 on usb c side and then use hdmi 2.0 for the 3rd 4K monitor..

If you do 5K display then it’s a single 4K combination..

It’s listed in the Apple mini spec sheet.

Support for the following combination of maximum concurrent display setups:
Up to three displays:
Two displays with 4096-by-2304 resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt 3 plus one display with 4096-by-2160 resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0
or
Up to two displays:
One display with 5120-by-2880 resolution at 60Hz connected via Thunderbolt 3 plus one display with 4096-by-2160 resolution at 60Hz connected via HDMI 2.0

I ordered one, I'm waiting arrival. Here is my question: is there any benefit or difference using the HDMI output versus a Thurderbolt3/DisplayPort monitor connection. I've read about people struggling with the HDMI at higher resolution (4K) and generally have read the opinion that DisplayPort is better in general than HDMI.

Thanks for the review, Dan. I am curious as to the editing performance of your setup using Final Cut Pro. I have read mixed reviews and some that say FCP doesn't even use EGPU if you have it. Do you find that the EGPU improves performance in FCP? I'm particularly interested in playback performance. Thanks!

Dan - thanks for the video - I have a few questions about monitor connection. I about to get the i7 version - I want to get a 4k monitor but spend as little as possible. Does that monitor HAVE to have a Thunderbolt 3 connection? Would an adapter hurt quality or speed or lag or anything like that? Also what about connecting my Non 4K extra monitor that has a regular HDMI connection as a second monitor? Lastly - any suggestions for inexpensive monitor? Thanks

Well presented informative video. I'm buying one with 2tb storage. 16GB MEMORY AND I7 Processor with new keyboard and magic mouse. I'll set it up with my 55-inch curved 4k tv. and sometimes show it on my projector with 120-inch display. I will purchase it cheaper in Dubai in February 2019. PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO SHOWING IT WORKING. Everyone talks about it but doesn't show it working in their videos.

This is not a future proof machine, and not for "pros". Please carefully evaluate before buying it.
I tested it in store the graphic performance was bad. Launchpad is laggy on a 5k display. The graphic is UHD 630 regardless the CPU choice - it even worse than 13 inch MacBook Pro 2018 by about 30% in term of performance. Yes you can always hook it up with a eGPU, but only that backmagic one can drive a 5K display with thunderbolt 3 cable.
