I actually submitted a concept for this!
My design made use of a purely mechanical, programmable memory cylinder that recorded the route and the physical features along the path of the rover. If the rover found itself in a dead-end, with features that it could not traverse, the memory would be used to navigate in reverse along a known-good path, until it found a safe turnout or alternate path.

Sometimes my mind is racing at night and I can’t sleep. Then I think of Anton and watch a video. Every time it works like magic.

Imagine seeing an alien probe land on earth. We gather around the deployment area, eagerly anticipating the incredible super-hightech alien computer tech onboard controlling it.
Then.... A clockwork wind-up spider with a windmill on top of it crawls out, with no electronics what so ever.
